Letters for April 26

C.S. at crossroads

College Station is at a crossroads with this election. Lots of plans are in the works. I can still see the looks of utter disdain on the faces of a couple of prominent councilmen sitting through citizen testimony at the huge Weingarten Realty town hall hearing on "big box" commercial development, and again, at the Wellborn annexation hearing at city hall.

Both meetings were packed with residents affected by city council actions. I hope the people who were so upset then realize where power sits and will make it to the polls next week.

The choice is relatively clear cut: unfettered commercial development, Houston-style, or controlled, flexible development in the face of rapid growth, to preserve and protect the character of our town.

Dennis Maloney, John Crompton, and Larry Stewart, appear to have ears for the residents and complementary skills in business and city planning for the city council.

The other slate, Ron Gay, Chris Scotti and Derek Dictson is assertively dedicated to promoting business and commercial interests.

You are a super delegate. Your vote is that critical. City council is where fateful decisions are made. If you even suspect Mother's Day or A&M graduation ceremonies will interfere with the May 10 election, vote during early voting Monday through May 6.

Vote because you can.
