Letters for April 23

Plan a unique city

Early voting in the College Station City Council election begins on Monday and I am compelled to write in support of John Crompton, Dennis Maloney and Lawrence Stewart, all exceptional men of quality and vision.

These candidates strongly encourage economic development with fiscal discipline and with consideration for location of potential new businesses. They believe that a council that works together responsibly as a team will make decisions for the betterment of the whole community. They acknowledge the rapid growth we are experiencing and are dedicated to the goal of careful planning of that growth.

Crompton, Maloney and Stewart also advocate the preservation of the character of our university community rather than building another big city made of "commercial boxes" and asphalt parking lots.

They care about traffic congestion and safety issues that must be addressed before massive commercial development can begin. They promote the preservation of green areas and natural habitats for endangered species of plants and animals. They take into account the need for more and safer bikeways as well as for quality schools for our children.

The candidates I endorse would help to plan a unique city with an attractive, inviting character that is carefully developed to safely meet the needs of the people and guests.

For responsible leadership without an ulterior motive to serve beyond a passion for the integrity of a vital and unique community, please cast your vote for John Crompton in Place 1, Dennis Maloney in Place 3 and Lawrence Stewart in Place 5.

Effective leaders

Having lived in College Station for more than 23 years, I have been to many Planning and Zoning Commission meetings and city council meetings.

I have seen John Crompton working hard to get ordinances passed and to get new policies and goals approved to aid the citizens of College Station. I have seen Dennis Maloney work hard on the council to improve the situation of neighborhoods and to support and guide long-term successful business development. I know that Larry Stewart has been active in Emerald Forest working on neighborhood issues and regional development as a president of the Homeowners Association in past years.

Each of these men would bring a great range of experience to the city council. They know that while people may move from College Station for other jobs, often they come back here to raise their children or to live near their extended families.

None of these men would ever tell residents that they should just move to another neighborhood, as a council member suggested at a council meeting last fall.

These three men are actively involved in our community and would be effective leaders for our city. Please vote for John Crompton, Dennis Maloney, and Larry Stewart for College Station City Council.
