Letters for May 7

Ethical leadership

There has been much discussion about the candidates for College Station City Council being either pro- or anti-development and pro- or anti-students. One group would create an environment where developers would come here and build, not raise taxes, and solve all the traffic problems. The other would raise taxes, while increasing fees developers must pay, which would drive all development to Bryan.

I don't think either of those scenarios is exactly correct.

John Crompton, Dennis Maloney and Larry Stewart are not anti-development or anti-students. They do not want to raise our taxes. They do, however, want smart development that occurs with adequate planning and open discussion. They want development that makes sense for College Station in a location suitable for the nature and scope of the development proposed. They want to attract the types of businesses that provide a living wage and promote a standard of living consistent with the expectations of the citizens.

We need council members who will listen to all constituents, take seriously their comments and concerns, and be willing to have open discussions to resolve the issues we all face. We need council members with ethics, leadership and vision, willing to hear all parties to a discussion and strike a balance between the will of the majority and the best interest of the city. With the rapid rate of past growth, and the projected growth of the future, it is essential to have council members who possess these qualities, or we will fall further behind and become even more divided and frustrated.

Please join me in voting for John Crompton, Dennis Maloney and Larry Stewart to promote the inclusion of all citizens of College Station. Most of all, please vote.

PAUL GREER

Walks the walk

If College Station voters are interested in the integrity and preservation of their neighborhoods, they should vote for John Crompton for City Council, Place 1, on May 10. John has been a constant voice on this issue, often with little support from other council members, and he has continued to represent neighborhood communities in spite of opposition from special interest groups, especially developers.

Crompton favors stronger enforcement of city codes which should improve the quality of life in existing neighborhoods. We need standard enforcement of all city codes, and John Crompton is a candidate who is willing to walk the walk on this issue instead of just talking about it.

I have attended almost every council workshop in 2008 and I have seen John remain steadfast in representing the best interests of neighborhoods, even though he knew that might not be a popular idea with certain special interests within the city. I know he is someone I can trust and that is important to me and should be for everyone else who is interested in maintaining the quality of life we now enjoy in College Station.

College Station residents now have the opportunity to control the quality of the building that occurs in their neighborhoods through the overlay districts that John Crompton worked hard to get established. This should be an important issue for all residents in our city and will enable property owners to have some control in maintaining property values in the neighborhoods where they live.

John is concerned about the quality of life in College Station and has worked hard to try to improve that quality whenever possible. I believe John Crompton would continue to provide excellent representation for the residents of College Station and that is why I support him for College Station City Council, Place 1.

Dedicated, works hard

John Crompton, who is running for re-election to the College Station City Council, is distinguished and accomplished as a small businessman, as an award-winning expert in government finance and marketing, and as a consultant to towns and cities all over the nation.

He has lived in College Station since 1974, and, as those who have googled him or heard him interviewed on local radio will know, he was instrumental in founding the College Station Soccer Club, launching Kids Klub, attracting the Arctic Wolf Ice Center to the city, and much more. He has been active in planning parks at the state and local levels for decades.

We in College Station are lucky to have benefited from his experience and knowledge during the past year, when he has been on the city council. John Crompton has been a dedicated and hard-working member of the council.

John Crompton's opponent has received massive financial support from big developers. Their hope is to buy this election as a sort of business investment, and to take their quick profits out of unplanned development.

In contrast to them, John Crompton will work to maintain property values for existing homeowners by preserving and improving the quality of life for residents of College Station, while fostering intelligent development in the interests of our growing community.

Join me in supporting John Crompton and re-electing him to the city council.
